Citizen Science Initiative: Bird Survey in Bundi district, Rajasthan
On World Wildlife Day, March 3, 2025, a citizen science program focusing on a bird survey was launched in the Bundi district of Rajasthan. This initiative was organized by the Bombay Natural History Society (BNHS), EIACP centre, in collaboration with the Ramgarh Vishdhari Tiger Reserve (RVTR).
The event aimed to engage local communities in conservation efforts and raise awareness about birds in the Bundi district. It was a two-day event. The first day featured presentations by BNHS-EIACP. Dr. Sujit Narwade, the EIACP coordinator and Deputy Director of BNHS, discussed bird ecology and counting methods. The frontline staff of RVTR and local citizens were introduced to ‘eBird,’ a popular bird recording platform used worldwide. Ms. Natasha Girkar, Information Officer at BNHS-EIACP, delivered a step-by-step presentation on using eBird. Shri Arbind Jha, the Deputy Conservator of the Forest (DyCF) of RVTR, welcomed all participants and provided the background of the event. Both sessions were accessible to participants via an online platform.
On the second day, March 4, 2025, participants received hands-on training in bird watching in the core area of RVTR. This training included counting methodology, ethics, and using the eBird platform. The group observed 33 bird species at two locations within RVTR, specifically Jarbanda Lake and Bherupura Antri. The birds sighted included the Comb Duck, Gadwall, Northern Pintail, Ruddy Shelduck, and Northern Shoveler. Other species observed included the Indian Thick-knee, Grey Francolin, Indian Grey Hornbill, and White-bellied Drongo. Additionally, two Marsh Crocodiles were seen basking on the banks.
Overall, participants had a wonderful experience, were encouraged to learn how to use eBird, and successfully uploaded their sightings to the platform.
